Brighton Libby Main
It’s been well over a year since I’ve updated this blog. It’s not for lack of interesting things going on in our lives, but lack of blogging enthusiasm on my part. I admire you diehard moms who blog once a week.  I have been grateful to have Melody’s birth story on here for documentation, and can’t miss including Brighton’s.

Before I go into her story I will update you on our life right now. David graduated from Physical Therapy school in May (yay!) and accepted a job in Colorado Springs. We did not originally think we would end up here, but the job was a good opportunity, and after visiting the area, we really liked it. We bought a house and closed in July. It has been a lot of fun decorating our home knowing that we will be here for a while. Up until now in our married life, David and I had never lived in one place for longer than a year, so it’s a nice feeling to finally be settled.

Brighton was due August 15th. My pregnancy was very similar to Melody’s, except I got bigger a lot faster this time around. When we decided to get pregnant again, I didn’t consider the fact that I would be huge and pregnant in the middle of summer, and I definitely won’t make that mistake again. The swelling was way worse this time around, and sleeping in the heat wasn’t awesome either. Needless to say, I was ready for baby to come as soon as she was ready.  In my family it is rare to have the baby before your due date, so I wasn’t counting on an early delivery. At my 38 week appointment I was told I was dilated to 3 and 60% effaced. This initially got us really excited that she may be coming early, but as the days went by and no signs of labor, I made peace with the fact that she would probably come on or after her due date. At my 39 week appointment, I had made little progress (3.5cm, 60% effaced). My doctor was on call at the hospital that weekend and offered to schedule an induction on Aug 11th. They were sure the baby would be big, and based on how far along I already was with dilating, he felt that I would be a good candidate for induction. I was induced with Melody, and I really wanted to go into labor naturally this time around, so I declined the offer.  That Saturday (the 11th), we went into home decorating mode and bought all the curtains for our house, sewed five valences, and ironed and hung everything. I remember telling David if all the activity I had done that day didn’t put me into labor, nothing was going to do it. We collapsed into bed around midnight, exhausted from the day.

At 1:05am I woke up with what I thought was a contraction. I had been having Braxton Hicks contractions constantly for weeks, but they didn’t hurt like this did. I waited until I had three contractions to wake up David. At this point it was about 1:15 am. I used David’s phone app that tracks contractions and found I was having them about every three minutes and they were getting progressively worse. It was time to go to the hospital! We called a few people in our ward to come sit in the house while Melody slept, but couldn’t get a hold of anyone so we grabbed her out of bed and took her with us. We were packed up and in the car to the hospital at 1:55am.  I was very happy in that moment that we only live about three minutes from the hospital, and was very much looking forward to an epidural. We rushed into labor and delivery and at that point the pain was so bad I couldn’t walk. It was about 2:05am, now, only an hour from when I woke with my first contraction. I literally felt like the baby was falling out. They put us in a small room to track contractions and verify that I was in active labor and could be admitted. Hello! I was in labor! It felt like forever before a nurse came in and calmly hooked me up to monitors and checked my cervix. I was shocked as she checked and announced that I was fully dilated and ready to deliver the baby. My first response was, do we have time for an epidural? I couldn’t wrap my head around doing this without any pain medication. It was not a part of my plan and I was not ready for it. She confirmed that there most certainly was not time for an epidural and quickly carted me to a delivery room. As I switched beds in the delivery room I knew it was time to push, but my doctor wasn’t there yet. I couldn’t hold it in and began to push. Immediately my water broke. At that moment the doctor ran in and instructed me to push. I was in panic mode, and was still trying to process that I was having the baby right now. Two pushes later the head was out, and with another push she was here, all 9lbs, 8oz of her! Brighton was born at 2:32 am, only an hour and a half after my first contraction. I was in complete shock. It took a while to process all that had happened. Miss Melody had been along for the ride and got to experience it with us. David said at one point during the delivery she put her blanket over her head and covered her ears…I’m hoping because it was the middle of the night, the memory will fade quickly.

Recovery has been surprisingly quick compared to Melody. Because it all happened so fast they didn’t have time to put in an IV, and I didn’t have the epidural pain in my back like last time. I tore, but only a small amount, and have not experienced much pain from my stitches. I guess it’s a reward for the traumatic delivery experience. I was spoiled to have David and my mom at home the first week after she was born. My mom stocked our fridge for the next month, making sure there is no way this baby weight is coming off fast. Brighton has been a great baby thus far. She looks much more like her Mommy than Melody with my nose and fairer skin, but still no red hair. Maybe next time:). She has been an awesome sleeper, and is just starting to wake up a little bit. I can already tell her demeanor is different than Melody. Even this early in life you can get a feel for their personality. Melody was much more social while Brighton is more reserved. We’ll see how that changes as she gets older. We are so excited and blessed to have her in our home!

Cannon Beach

For our last weekend in Portland, we drove to Cannon Beach and spent some time on the beach. Despite the chilly weather, we played in the water, buried Melody in the sand and walked along the beautiful coastline. The views at this beach are absolutely gorgeous. After coming back to Denver in the 90+ weather, I would take a cool day on the beach any day.

She got more daring as the day progressed.

David's B-Day!

While we were in Portland David turned the big 27! We celebrated with our nieces and nephews at home, and had all of David's favorites - homemade hamburgers and curly fries for dinner, root beer floats, strawberry lemonade cupcakes, and lemon cheesecake!

Seattle

We couldn't go all the way to Portland without visiting Seattle, especially because David had never been there and because my oldest brother and his family live there. The first night we were there, my brother, Ric, treated us to a night out at Jazz Alley. We had dinner and were entertained by a great electric jazz band. It was so nice to get away on our own, hire a babysitter, and have a grown-up date that didn't involve renting a Redbox. The next day we ventured to the city and walked through Pike Place Market, hung out at the pier, and went to the Space Needle. We really liked the feel in Seattle, and if it weren't for the almost constant rainy weather, would love to settle there.

Melody loved chasing the pigeons.

Portland - Food Network Style

When we found out we were going to Portland, rather than look up the "must-see" sites, I immediately looked up the "must-eats" on Food Network. David and I are big fans of 'Man vs Food,' and 'Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,' so we were excited to explore some of the places we saw when these shows covered Portland. We ended up getting to go to most of the places on our list. The food did not disappoint, but we were surprised at how much of a dive some of these places were. The Food Network definitely doesn't show the less glamorous parts of the restaurants.

While there we had man-cakes at Stepping Stone Cafe, ate a 'Reggie' at Pine State Biscuits, savored salted carmel flavored ice-cream at Ruby Jewel Scoops, and tasted a variety of eccentric donuts at Voodoo Doughnut.

Caution: Do not do the Voodoo on Memorial Day - 2 hour wait

Therapeutic Associates

We have been in Portland the last eight weeks for David's second clinical rotation. While we were there, we stayed at my sister's house. I enjoyed lots of sister bonding, and Melody loved running around with her cousins. She has been running around the house aimlessly since we have been home, looking for someone to play with.

David's clinical was at an outpatient orthopedic clinic called Therapeutic Associates. David knew that he would love to specialize in outpatient ortho and the last few weeks just confirmed it. He had a really great experience, and was lamenting having to go back to classes this morning. We can't wait for him to get his real job, just two more semesters...

Easter Fun

Doesn't this girl look excited for Easter?

It was an eventful Easter weekend, and I think we all ate enough Reeses eggs to last us until Halloween (or maybe Mother's Day:). We started the weekend off with a community Easter egg hunt on Saturday. It took Melody a while to catch on to picking up the eggs. She loves kicking balls, so she thought the Easter eggs were meant to be kicked too. Her haul was much less than the other kids, but she was just as excited when it was over. You would think having Easter later in the year would mean better weather, but alas, it was pretty windy and on the cold side. That's just Denver weather for you, always unpredictable.

The Easter bunny came that night, and brought Melody her first pair of dress up shoes. The girl is obsessed with wearing other people's shoes so I thought these would help. She's still not convinced they are better than my shoes, but we are working on it.

We went to church in the afternoon and had an amazing sacrament meeting. After church we got together with David's family and had a traditional Easter dinner, aside from the fact that rice was served instead of potatoes, but it's not a Main family meal without the rice. To top it off, I made sugar cookies and brownstone cake for dessert. Overall it was a great weekend and a nice way to start the week. David has finals this week and next week then we're off to Portland for eight weeks, yay!

Evil Knievel

How exactly does she get up there? We aren't quite sure but this is how we have found her on several occasions. And this was just the beginning. She has now found out how to get on the counter, up a step stool to push the water button on the fridge, and to the ledge at the top of the couch. When I learned I was having a girl I was so excited because girls are mild mannered and love to sit and play. Only boys are rambuncious and fearless right? How do you baby proof a house from a climbing baby? I have yet to figure that out.

After we took the picture above, we put Melody on the ground and she attempted to get up again. As you can see she is not always 100% successful (Please excuse our laughing).

The Doc

Does anyone else have the hardest time deciding when/if to take your baby to the doctor? The last few weeks have been filled with sick baby drama.

Visit #1 (three weeks ago): Melody had a fever for four days, a bad cold, and wasn't sleeping well. So I bit the bullet and took her into the doctor. Diagnosis: it's just a cold. Mom got to take the walk of shame out of the office feeling like a paranoid first mom.

Visit #2 (Yesterday): Melody had a fever for four days, a runny nose, a congested cough and wasn't sleeping at all. Despite feeling like I would take the walk of shame again for the second time in three weeks I went to the doctor. Diagnosis: Double ear infection and RSV (I didn't even realize babies her age could still be affected by RSV).

Lesson learned: As much I hate going to the doctor, I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

The Semi-Annual Update

Ok, I wish the title of this post was not a joke, but given my blogging history I don't think it's a stretch... but that is about to change. I got a new computer this week (whoopee!), meaning I don't have to wait around to use David's computer which is always at class or being used to study.

Since my last post, David had his first clinical, we had Halloween, Melody's Birthday, and Christmas. Lots of photos to catch you all up on, but I will just post a few highlights.

Melody picking our pumpkin for Halloween.

We celebrated Melody's first birthday at the end of November. Her favorite part of the party was getting dirty in her birthday cake.

This girl loves her new chair. She mostly uses it to climb onto something more dangerous.

My most recent picture of our almost 15 month old.

Count on more posts to come. I am trying to set a realistic goal of one post every two weeks. I gotta ease myself into the blogging world!

Picture Overload

What a great six months it has been! Yes we still have a blog, and yes we are horrible about updating it. Since Melody was born much has changed.

I went back to work full time after 12 weeks of maternity leave. It was a tough adjustment. Luckily we had a wonderful resource for childcare and a friend from our ward watched Melody while I worked. Working full time was not the ideal situation for our family so I worked out a situation with my work where I am now working part time from home. We feel so blessed for that opportunity.

David finished his second (and hardest of the program) semester in May and is now in summer school. He is pretty burned out at this point, but clinicals start in August and we are both very excited, as we will be going to Boise for the first clinical.

And dear Melody has been with us for a whole six months now. It's amazing how much they change in that little time. Just when we think we are used to her routine, she changes it up. We thought we had solid foods down, then it was like she forgot how to eat and we had to start all over. We thought her nap routine was set but that changes on a weekly basis. It keeps us on our toes.

Here are some highlights of Melody in the last six months:

Just one of the many faces she gives us. This is her "I'm not to sure about all the pictures you're about to see..." face.

Bath time is fun, especially with Dad as the mohawk specialist.

She loves Saturdays just about as much as we do. A good excuse to hang out in bed letting it all hang out.

She hates her Bumbo.

Blessing Day

Okay this was staged, but she generally assumes this position as Mom and Dad get ready for the day.

She has mad fort building skills. Dad is very excited about this.

Another one of her great faces. She is meeting her cute cousins for the first time.

Melody loved the time she spent with Dad during Spring Break.

Our happy girl.

First attempt at solid food = success

Second attempt at solid food = failure

This is a result of parent neglect. We thought she was playing and turned around to her completely out. I guess she gave up on us putting her to bed that night.

Easter picture with her cousin Hailey.

Movie night with Hailey

Don't be fooled, right after the picture she dropped the bottle and spilled all over herself.

Trying to crawl.

David and I were really bored one night and this was the result. At the time it was very funny.

Helping Mom cook dinner.

Most recent photo at six months. Stats: 25 inches, 16 pounds, 10 ounces.

Happy Memorial Day!
